The stories in this series take place in 18th-century Japan, during the Japanese Sakoku or retreat period (the first four games take place in 1788 and 1789). With a great artistic license, thanks to which characters born abroad (including some places that did not exist) as such in 1788), and feature monsters can also be part of the story. The plot of each game is completely different, but they revolve around a central group of characters and a region in Japan.

Samurai Shodown consistently presents fragments of Japanese culture and language around the world with minor changes. For example, unlike most fighting games made in Japan, the characters in the series (including the announcer) usually speak only Japanese, with dialects ranging from archaic formalities and theater to contemporary slang, which has been preserved in foreign editions. Winning quotes and other breaks provide subtitles in several languages, including English, Portuguese and German. Much of the music includes traditional Japanese instruments (mainly shakuhachi, shamisen, koto and taiko), and later enka. Several characters are loosely based on real characters from Japanese history.
